Everyone who knows me knows I love a good budget and I also love food. Fortunately, I’m not the one in charge of grocery shopping (thanks, Wyatt!) so I don’t have to have a budget for that. Unfortunately, that means I don’t try as hard as I should to stick to a grocery budget. After being on vacation for a few days and realizing just how much we spend on food when we eat out (which is more often than I’d like to admit), I’ve decided it’s time for a change. When we’re tired and don’t want to cook, we get pizza. When we know we have to go somewhere and don’t think we have enough time to cook, we get fast food. Wyatt lumps food all into one category (i.e.: groceries and fast food are in the same budget) which just doesn’t make sense to me. He also puts household items in that budget so I think one of my biggest challenges is going to be getting him to change that habit. We need to track exactly what we’re spending on food we consume and what is health/beauty products that we may be able to cut out a little bit.
Here’s why I think we need to take control again. We ate at Moe’s when we got back on Monday, and the total for two of us was $20. Even if we only ate out once a week (which some weeks we do, some weeks it’s more) that’s $100 for four meals: that’s groceries for almost 2 full weeks for us. Our grocery spending is significantly lower than most, I read online that most two person “thrifty” households spend over $80 a week in groceries, but I think we can beat it even more than we are now. I love eggs, noodles, rice, soup, and pasta. I’m not an extravagant person, I don’t crave variety, so you’d think this should be easy.
My ultimate goal is to stop shopping every single week. The gas and mileage that we put on the cars to shop that much is a little unnecessary, and there’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to plan at least 2 weeks in advance and make sure we have everything we need. If anyone has suggestions/tips on meal planning, please reach out to me! It’s going to be a big change for me because we usually just buy staples and go from there, but I really want to start planning lunches and dinners and setting aside specific days to eat leftovers so we don’t have to cook every single night of the week.
This is a new journey for me and any tips or hints or meal ideas are greatly appreciated. Keep in mind I pack my lunch daily and I am totally no against taking leftovers with me! I’ll definitely make a new post once we get into the swing of things and find out what’s working and what isn’t: hopefully it will help some of you as well.
